Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
China's official policy of Reform and Opening up in the late 70s and early 80s focused mainly on economic reforms, but allowed also some political changes. It was quickly followed by non-official initiatives and demands from a newly emerging Chinese civil society to achieve more freedom in the political, cultural and academic fields. Activists in many cities published privately produced independent journals and wrote critical dazibao (big character posters), artists started to explore new forms and topics beyond Socialist Realism. Despite some sympathies and support from above, these grass-root movements and nonconformist cultural initiatives quickly aroused resistance from hard-liners in the leadership. Political activists were eventually arrested; many independent artists went into exile, while debates on the scope of reforms and freedoms continued for some years.
Assessment and permitted materials
Credits will be attributed on the basis of the oral presentation within the group, the individual written papers (including homeworks), and the active participation in debates. The main criteria will be to which extend the student is capable to analyze the main aspects of the topic and to present them in a systematic and scientific way.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
The students should acquire knowledge on the most important developments and original texts of China's Democracy Movement of the late 70s and early 80s, its influence on further political and social changes in China, and they should acquaint themselves with available literature on the subject.
Examination topics
After an introduction to events and study of original texts, the students, in small groups, prepare presentations on specific aspects, which will be analyzed and discussed by the plenum. Then the students will write individual papers on their subject (25.000 characters net + list of consulted sources and literature).
