Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The emphasis is on practicing everyday communicative situations in a business environment. The students will acquire the necessary skills and competencies to use the Chinese language appropriately in basic oral business conversation.
The focus is on acquiring and enlarging the productive and receptive business-related vocabulary as well as typical sentence patterns and phrases. This also includes typical expressions and patterns pertinent to a more formal communicative register.
Methods, activities:
- Reading/Listening to and analysis of business-related dialogues and texts.
- Practicing business-related dialogues orally.
- Classroom work; pair work (closed and open pairs); group work; role plays.
- Collaborative learning
Overview of topics/situations/semantic fields:
- getting to know each other: talking about study majors
- control language (useful phrases to control a conversation)
- telephoning (L1 in the textbook)
- asking for/giving directions (L3 in the textbook)
- describing location
- office supplies
- office small-talk
- business-lunches/banquets and toasting
- making appointments (L5 in the textbook)
- price negotiations (L6 in the textbook)
- money

Assessment and permitted materials

Assessment of written and oral contributions during the entire semester (preparation; homework; tasks in Moodle using tools as forum, WIKI, glossaries; Moodle tests with single-choice-tasks, multiple-choice-tasks, drag-and-drop-tasks, cloze tasks or paper-based tests): 10%
Written Mid-term Exam (paper-based): 20%
Written Final Exam: 30%
Oral Final Exam: 40%

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

100% – ≤90%: Very good (1)
89% – ≤80%: Good (2)
79% – ≤70%: Satisfactory (3)
69% – ≤60%: Sufficient (4)
59% – 0%: Insufficient (5)
If you miss more than three classes you will receive a negative mark.
