Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course introduces students to the method of quantitative content analysis and its application to questions in Sinology. Quantitative content analysis aims to systematically capture and quantitatively describe the contents of a text corpus. In this exercise, all stages of this method will be carried out by the course participants under the guidance of the instructor. This includes formulating a question related to the scholarly literature, determining a text corpus suitable for the question, developing a coding scheme, applying the scheme to the corpus, and reporting the results. The contents to be analyzed can be obtained from traditional or social media, government documents, speeches, literature, or other sources. Texts can be written in Chinese, English, or German.

The course is divided into two parts. In the first part, basic concepts of social science methods, concepts and techniques of quantitative content analysis, and examples of their application in China re-search will be introduced. In the second part, course participants will apply quantitative content analysis in project groups, present their results, and prepare a final report.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The minimum requirement for a positive grade is to comply with the absence limit (see below), submit all components I-IV (including active participation in group work), and ontain at least 51 out of 100 points in the overall grade. Each assessment component will be evaluated independently and will contribute to the overall grade according to the percentage distribution.

If there are more than three absences (in the form of a 1.5 hour session), your course performance will be evaluated as insufficient. Warnings for an impending violation of the absence rule will not be sent.

The course instructor provides input lectures and assistance. The focus of learning is for students to work on the content under guidance. To achieve this, regular attendance and participation are essential, as well as reading the required reading.

Project Groups
If course participants do not fulfil their assigned tasks in the project groups and do not respond promptly to messages from other group members, please inform the course instructor immediately. If a group member drops out or does not do his/her share of work, this will be taken into account during grading.

Assessment component
Aside from participation, the course consists of five assessment components. Details on format, scope, deadlines, and other requirements will be communicated in writing on the course's Moodle page. If deadlines are missed, 3 points will be deducted per day.
