Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
In this course, students will learn more about the meaning of key terms such as regionalism, regionalization, regional integration, and multilateralism. They will discuss various concepts of region including Asia, East Asia, Northeast Asia, Southeast Asia, and Maritime Asia. In addition, they will understand various conceptual and theoretical issues including federalism, (neo)functionalism, and inter-governmentalism. This newly acquired knowledge will then be applied to specific East Asian cases such as APEC, ASEAN, the Six Party Talks, the East Asian Community, the Trans-Pacific Partnership, the Chiang Mai Initiative, and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.
Assessment and permitted materials
The course can only be completed successfully if you have submitted each of the two as-signments. Failure to submit any of the assignments will result in a grade of „5“ for the complete course. For submitted assignments, the final grade will be calculated as follows:
Group presentation: 49%
Book review: 51%
Active class participation is required. Absence will affect your grade according to these rules: Absence at more than three classes: final grade is reduced by 1; absence at more than four classes: final grade is reduced by 2; and so forth.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Studenst will build their theoretical knowledge on key terms and concepts retaed to regional cooperation. They develop and train their ability to apply these to specific cases in contemporary East Asia.
Examination topics
After having jointly defined and discussed the field, students will be asked to apply their knowledge to specific cases in East Asia in the form of group presentations. This includes joint handouts with the key points on the assigned topic, and joint PPT presentations. Details of the assignments (contents, due date etc.) are specified in a separate document.
In addition, students are required to write a book review on any book of their choice on East Asia and Regionalism/Regional Integration/Regionalization; our library has a good collection. The book review should have not less than 1,000 and not more than 1,500 words (pure text; bibliography etc. does not count). Its structure should (strictly!) follow these guidelines: http://www.chicano.ucla.edu/press/siteart/jli_bookreviewguidelines.pdf . The guidelines will also be posted on Moodle; note in particular the singe points (1-18) mentioned on page 3-4.
All written assignments are to be submitted in electronic form, preferably as PDFs. Please submit by sending them as email attachments to my address as provided above. Don’t forget to state your name, the course title, and the actual assignment within the course. Make sure that the attached document has a front page with all this information, too.
