Aims, contents and method of the course

The goal of this course is to enhance knowledge about North Korea in a very broad sense. Students learn about the origins and current developments in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korea) as the source or object of actual or potential conflict in the East Asian region. This includes aspects such as economic development and social issues.The following areas will be covered: History and tradition; ideology and the leaders; political system; economy: basics; economic reforms; special economic zones; the leadership of Kim Jong-Un; unification.

Assessment and permitted materials

The final grade will be composed out of the results of two multiple-choice exams and will be weighted by an evaluation of attendance and in-class discussion activity.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

In order to pass the course, at least one of the two m/c exams must be passed, combined with regular attendance. Although regular participaion is mandatory, active participation is not expected in this course.

Examination topics

The m/c exams will be based on the readings as well as the instructor's PPTs.
