Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
Theoretical aspects of governance research are introduced and discussed based on selected texts. This will be later specified with regard to the East Asian region.
Assessment and permitted materials
Students’ participation in discussion is an integral part of this course. Regular participation is thus mandatory. The following rules apply: The final grade remains unchanged in the case of up to three absences. If you are absent for up to 4 times, the final grade will be reduced by one full grade. If you are absent for up to 5 times, the final grade will be reduced by two full grades, and so forth.
The final grade for the course will be calculated as follows:

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Students know and understand the field of governance research and its main questions and issues. They are able to apply this knowledge to concrete cases. They know and understand important issues in East Asian governance. This includes examples from China, Japan, North and South Korea as well as pan-regional issues.
Examination topics
This is a lecture course with a certain interactive element. Students are expected to read regularly and to participate actively in discussions. They have to prepare two essays (around 5 pages each) and write one multiple-choice test.
Essay (1):
A critical discussion of “Good Governance“, based on the text of LAM 2002 (available as a PDF via the e-learning platform) and supplemented by other materials.
Essay (2):
Critical discussion of a freely chosen text related to “Governance in East Asia”. The text has to be chosen from the database JSTOR or a comparable source. It can be supplemented by other materials.
