Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Reflecting our integrated teaching and learning concept, this exercise course complements the seminar Political Systems in East Asia (Plümmer). Students will have the chance to develop and further practice essential research skills that are needed for the seminar’s term paper (and throughout their studies at EcoS). Participation in both courses simultaneously (= SE Political Systems in East Asia + UE Exercise Course Political Systems in East Asia in the same semester) is thus highly recommended!

This is not a tutorial repeating key theories as discussed in the seminar. In this exercise course, students will practice essential research skills and develop their individual project with the possibility of receiving feedback and advice throughout the semester.

Students are thus counselled in developing their individual research in the field of comparative politics and governance research. Requirements of academic research are discussed with particular focus on the criteria applied for student term papers at EcoS and in the seminar Political Systems in East Asia (Plümmer). From early in the semester, students are expected to familiarise with potential research areas and develop their own research questions and approaches. Students will also present their research approach during in-class presentations and receive feedback from the lecturer and peers. Presentation topics/research questions must meet the requirements of the seminar Political Systems in East Asia (Plümmer), as the counselling and presentations are a direct preparation for student term papers in the seminar.

Assessment and permitted materials

• Individual assignments (20%)
• Individual presentations and handouts (single A4 page) (50%)
• Feedback and discussion of presentations, written and in-class (20%)
• Active participation (10%)

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Update 20 April 2020: Due to the extension of the Corona/COVID-19 measures taken by the University of Vienna, this course will continue to take place in the form of remote learning until the end of June 2020.

Due to the Corona/COVID-19 measures taken by the Austrian Federal Government and the University of Vienna, participation and attendance in this course will be assessed based on individual tasks posted on Moodle during the compulsory home-learning phase. Please check Moodle regularly for updates. All other requirements and criteria remain unchanged as for now (18 March 2020).

Positive grades (grade 4 or better) for all formal requirements as listed under “Assessment (Art der Leistungskontrolle)” are a minimum requirement for passing this course.

Regular attendance is mandatory and a minimum requirement. In case of absences, the following rule applies: The final grade remains unchanged for up to three absences. If students are absent four times, the final grade will be reduced by one full grade. If students are absent five times, the final grade will be reduced by two full grades. Students who are absent six or more times do not meet the minimum requirement and thus fail this course.
Please note: To ensure a smooth proceeding of the course, be on time! Students who are late by more than 10 minutes will not be signed in on the attendance list (thus count as absent).
Update 20 April 2020: Actual attendance is substituted by individual tasks on Moodle for the remote learning phase. Please check Moodle regularly for updates and assignments.

For the presentations, please upload your ppt and handout 24h before the start of your session via Moodle. Unannounced (less than 48h in advance) absence on the day of your presentation results in immediate failure of the presentation and thus the whole course.
Update 20 April 2020: Recorded presentation are to be uploaded on Moodle for the remote learning phase. Peer feedback and discussion will be written only. Please check Moodle for details.

Grading is based on a “continuous assessment of coursework” (“Prüfungsimmanente Lehrveranstaltung”). Repetition of individual assessment criteria, therefore, is not possible.

General Rules of Good Academic Practice apply. Non-compliance will result in legal measures according to the regulations of the University of Vienna. All written submissions via Moodle are subject to an automated plagiarism check.

All minimum requirements and assessment criteria will be discussed during the first class. By continuing this course, students accept all minimum requirements and assessment criteria. Attendance at the first session thus is mandatory. Absence at the first meeting will lead to automatic de-registration from this course.

Reading list

Students are required to independently research literature for their research and presentations.

For questions concerning the research process and citation style, "the Turabian" is a highly recommended companion from your first days of studying at EcoS:
