Aims, contents and method of the course

Course Description

In this course students will learn how to approach and perform the translation of Korean academic texts. The texts that they will be working with range from various disciplines, like economics, social science, political science, cultural studies, media studies and digital humanities, etc., so as to ground the students in the various ways the Korean language is used in different settings and what translation strategy is needed for each of these. Students will learn that translation not only requires a good command of the source language, but also that each translation brings with it its own difficulties, as the translator needs to make conscious choices whether to keep the source culture intact, or whether it is necessary to focus more on translating the text for the intelligibility of the target language.

Course Objectives

By the end of this course, students will:
Become acquainted with a range of Korean academic texts from various disciplines.
Learn about the different ways the Korean language (and especially Korean grammar) is used by authors to create nuance differences to persuade their readers.
Have a better understanding of the strategies used in the translation of Korean texts and see how these show up in a practical setting.
Learn to make decisions concerning the preservation of the source culture vs. the necessity to make the translation more intelligible for the target language audience.

Mindestanforderung:

-Anwesenheit – es besteht Anwesenheitspflicht (max. 3 Fehlstunden)
- Abgabe Übersetzungsübung
- Abgabe Vokabelliste

- Attendance and participation in class (20 Punkte)
- Preparation word list (20 Punkte)
- Translation exam of a Korean academic text of choice (60 Punkte)

Für eine positive Beurteilung der Lehrveranstaltung sind 60 Punkte erforderlich.

2 (gut) 89-81 Punkte
3 (befriedigend) 80-71 Punkte
4 (genügend) 70-60 Punkte
5 (nicht genügend) 59-0 Punkte

Examination topics

- Abgabe eines koreanischen Fachtextes zum Übersetzen (ca. 10 Seiten) mit Begründung zur Auswahl des Textes
- Abgabe einer Vokabelliste (ca. 3-4 Seiten; nur Vokabeln, die Ihnen unbekannt waren)
