Aims, contents and method of the course

Aims:
The course analyzes the postwar history of the Republic of Korea, as viewed through changes in the management and promotion of national heritage.
Students will acquire a better understanding of the importance of national heritage in promoting selected historical narratives and representations of nationhood and identity.
Students will grasp the plurality of messages and values that can be conveyed through national heritage, depending on the cultural, political and economic agendas of the state.

Method:
The course analyzes cases of historic sites, monuments and museums that have sparked controversies in Korea. Through the analysis of such cases, students can acquire a better understanding of specific cultural and political periods in the postcolonial era.

Contents:
1. Creating national identity through historic heritage during the Park Chung Hee era (1961-1979)
2. Dealing with the colonial legacy: the demolition of the National Museum of Korea
3. Museums and memorials: contested views of the past
4. Heritage and politics: the remaking of the Cheonggyecheon Stream
5. Korean heritage located abroad. The debate over ownership and the struggle to repatriate cultural properties
