Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course is designed to teach quantitative content analysis and its application to a research question in China studies. The goal of quantitative content analysis is to systematically capture the contents of a text corpus and describe their characteristics quantitatively. In this exercise, all steps of this method will be carried out by the participants under the guidance of the course instructor. This includes formulating a research question related to the scientific literature, determining a text corpus appropriate to the research question, developing a coding scheme, applying it to the corpus, and reporting the results.

First, basic concepts of social science methods, the concepts and techniques of quantitative content analysis, and examples of its application in China studies will be taught. Then, in small groups, participants will apply quantitative content analysis to a joint project under the instructor's guidance, present their results, and prepare a final report. By the end of the course, participants will have gained an overview of the method of quantitative content analysis and will be able to apply it independently.
