Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The aim of this course is to present Korean Grammars authored by Western Scholars from 1832 till 1890. Thus, this lecture offers a detailed inquiry into the early formation of Korean grammar from the historical point of view. Participants will learn how to approach these sources and how to gain the relevant linguistic knowledge. Historical backgrounds will also form part of the lecture. Western scholars began the study Korean with the collection of vocabulary needed for missionary work. This evolved into the base of Korean grammar. Early achievements of Western scholars focused on morphological and syntactic phenomena. As Korean is an agglutinative language and morphologically different from Western languages, early scholars had many problems to group vocabularies into different categories. Each attempt to organize the material betrayr a huge influence of the scholar’s mother language. Sources used for this study are:
1. (1832) Ch. Güzlaff: Remarks on the Corean Language
2. (1864) L. de Rosny: Apercu de langue coréenne
3. (1874) Ch. Dallet: La langue coréenne
