Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Taking Chinese medicine as a case in point, the participants examine how cultural crises in modern China happen on the national scale and on the level of Chinese medicine practitioners' life-stories who are aged about sixty to eighty years today.

Assessment and permitted materials

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Generally speaking, ¿Chinese¿ medicine is linked to a modern crisis of cultural identification. Nevertheless, in this course it is not understood simply as a cultural monolith that resisted modernity. Based on historical events from the Republican period and on further steps of institutionalization in the late 1950s and early 1960s we will trace the process how TCM has come to be understood as non-modern and then again as national heritage. Finally, the experiences of TCM practitioners shall demonstrate when the very cultural discourse becomes relevant as part of their life-stories at all.
