Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
Assessment and permitted materials
Knowledge of any East Asian language is not required, although you are more than welcome to apply it, for example by selecting a news source in an original language.
Weekly notes: Each student will be assigned one newspaper or similar source (news source). In preparation of each unit, students will be asked to read related articles in the assigned news source and to prepare a short informal presentation of their contents, identifying at least two major themes and knowing some of their background. The written notes for each of the sessions must be posted on Moodle 24 hours before class.
Interim summaries: Occasionally, we will focus on particular events or issues and discuss them more deeply. For that purpose, the class will be divided into teams. During each designated session (see schedule), two teams will present. Each of them will have to select one topic/issue that they would like to talk about and use input from their respective news source to collect empirical information. This will be supplemented by background research. One grade will be given for the whole team.Final report: At the end of the semester, each student will be asked to submit a report (4,000 words) summarizing the results of his/her media analysis. The editorial deadline for the contents of these essays is May 25, 2020.
Participation: Students’ participation in discussion is an integral part of this course. Regular participation is thus mandatory. The following rules apply: The grade for attendance is “1” in the case of up to three absences. If you are absent for up to 4 times, the grade will be “2”. If you are absent for up to 5 times, the grade will “3”, and so forth.
In-class activity: Your in-class activity will be noted. This concerns the presentation of the last week’s main events from your news source as well as your participation in the discussion of other presentations. Please be aware that you will typically not be explicitly asked to present. It is up to you to actively share your results and insights.
The following rules apply to late submission of all assignments: A delay in submission of up to 1 week will result in downgrading by one full grade. A delay in submission of up to 2 weeks will result in downgrading by two full grades, and so forth.

CORONA UPDATE:
(1) We will not hold any further Jitsi or other video conference meetings. Aside from the low reliability and the fact that this would be only an imperfect replication of an actual classroom discussion, I am worried that it might work for 80 or 90% of you, but not for everybody. However, I will not leave a single one of you behind. We need a solution that works for all of you, without exception. (2) Keep submitting your weekly summaries as usual. This task is mandatory. Please make sure not to miss any of the submissions. (3) Each week, record a short commentary on your weekly assignment, for example with your mobile phones, and post the resulting video file in the related forum on Moodle. This task is mandatory. It is pretty much the same you would have had do anyway – except that you post your short talks online rather than giving them in the classroom. We have 90 minutes each week scheduled for our classroom interaction under ordinary circumstances, so I think it is ok if everybody uploads such a short recording. There are 11 students in this course; if you keep the speaking time to below 5 minutes, we would still remain well within the regular time frame. (4) Use the comment function in the Moodle forum to respond to the recorded weekly assignments This task is optional. You are more than welcome to comment, but you will not have to. The same applies to me. (5) Prepare the special topic presentations as scheduled, and record them using the recording function in Powerpoint (or use any other solution that offers a similar result). This task is mandatory. You would have had to prepare a presentation and to present it anyway, so this is no change from the original schedule. The only difference is that you will not hold the presentation live in the classroom, but rather record it. Please remember that Microsoft Office is available for free to all regular students at the University of Vienna. (6) Use the comment function in the Moodle forum to respond to the special topic presentations This task is optional. You are more than welcome to comment, but you will not have to. The same applies to me (although I am very likely to use the option). In any case, I will provide feedback to the teams on their respective performance and the grade they receive for this assignment. (7) We will stick to the original schedule. This means that in addition to the weekly notes, you are supposed to submit your two topics for the special presentation on March 29, upload your special topic presentations on May 04 and May 11, and submit your final report on June 22.

This VU is focusing on the latter. We will regularly read the online editions of some major English language newspapers from China, Japan, and Korea. Major events related to East Asia from the fields of the economy, politics and society will be identified and discussed in an explorative and comparative way. At the end of this course, students will have a better understanding of ongoing issues in Northeast Asia, of their background, and of the different perspectives taken in various countries of the region.
