Aims, contents and method of the course

I. General Introduction

The advanced technologies of the internet, such as Wi-Fi, 4G, social networks, search engines and cloud computation, are having significant effects on the information environment, leading to a paradigm shift in the financial sector and forming the internet finance, the third model of financing, which provides the possibility of the same efficiency as indirect financing models via commercial banks and direct financing models through security markets. It is no doubt that internet finance will generate great opportunities as well as challenges. Indeed, internet finance has developed rapidly during the last decade, in particular recently, in China.

II. Class Contents

This course will have four major units:
1. General historical review of internet finance
2. The economic theory of the internet finance model
3. The structure of internet finance
4. Impacts of internet finance on society and mankind

III. Topics & Schedule

The seminar will be held as a block seminar; it will start in May and last until June.

Class 1: Introduction and a brief history review of the internet era: its logic, theory,
technology and infrastructure
Class 2: The emergence, evolution and mechanisms of internet finance
Class 3: The transaction technologies of internet finance
Class 4: The transaction structure of internet finance
Class 5: Major digital currencies and technological characteristics
Class 6: Trade, payment, international transaction and digital
currencies
Class 7: The competition between internet finance and traditional finance
services
Class 8: Internet finance and inclusive finance as well as democratic finance
Class 9: Risks and challenges of internet finance
Class 10: The supervision and management of internet finance
Class 12: Conclusion

Assessment and permitted materials

I. Assessment

This course will be composed of lectures, presentations and discussions, focusing on the assigned reading. Students' final grade will depend on:
1. individual presentation (50%)
2. individual take-home essay (30%)
3. class participation, attendance, particularly in class discussion (20%)

II. Language Requirements

English will be the language of this course, and students should have the capability of:
1. reading English and Chinese texts (students who do not read Chinese can attend only after consultation with the professor!)
2. understanding the lectures presented in English
3. writing English home work and participating in Englosh language discussions

III. Other Requirements

1. In order to contribute to the class discussion, all students are requied to read the assigned text in advance.
2. Attendance in this seminar is mandatory and a timely appearance is required, unless exceptional circumstances occur.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

I. Objectives

The ultimate objectives of this course are to help students understand:
1. the historical process of internet technology progress and its impact on financial innovation in China;
2. the increasing influence of internet finance on the economy and society in China;
3. the future perspectives of internet finance in China;
4. the methodology of doing research on this topic.

II. Learning Outcomes

After completing the course, students should be:
1.vable to identify and describe the framework of internet finance;
2. knowledgeable of the major pillars of internet finance
3. familiar with the basic methods of research on and presentation of this topic.

Examination topics

This seminar is composed of lectures, presentations and discussions, and is to highlight both theories and case studies.
