Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course will continue right where Japanese Communication [Kommunikation auf Japanisch] finished, covering more basic grammar, vocabulary, and oral exercises. It is meant to be taken in tandem with Japanese Grammar II [Japanische Grammatik II] and Japanese Writing Systems.

Together, these provide students with basic skills in the Japanese language as well as the tools to build on those skills on their own. At the end of the second semester students should be able to
* communicate orally in various everyday situations
* understand basic spoken and written Japanese texts [the latter will require extensive use of dictionaries], including business- or economics-related ones aimed at a general audience
* read a few hundred of the most common kanji
* produce select kinds of written communication [with the help of a computer], e. g. e-mails
* expand on their knowledge of Japanese in self-study, using dictionaries, grammar references etc.

You should budget about 10 hours per week of additional study time for lesson preparation, homework, assignments, etc. acting in synergy with the complementary lesson.

The course will also cover everything required to pass the language part of the StEOP exam for Japanese Studies majors, enabling students to take more advanced language courses, if they wish to specialise further.

Business Japanese will continue to focus on constructively building an understanding of Japanese grammar and vocabulary by way of oral exercises and listening comprehension providing a base for the other two courses to build upon.

Assessment and permitted materials

This course uses continuous assessment (hat immanenten Prüfungscharakter), consequently active participation throughout the semester (both in class and outside) also can influence the grade. Aside from being prepared for class, volunteering for answering and asking questions etc. There will be homework, six small essays as well as a self-introduction video -- to be submitted on time. There will also be a written final test and three Mini-tests.

No materials or aids are permitted during tests (suitable exceptions can be made on request for students with a handicap).

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The course is graded as follows:
*Final test (35%)
*Mini-Tests x3 (5%x3 = total of 15%)
*Homework (17%)
*Small essays x6 (3%x6 = total of 18%)
*Self-Introduction video (10%)
*Active participation (5%)

More than 60 percentage points are required to pass the course.
Components weighted as above and translated into grades as follows:

> 90 % Excellent (A) [Sehr Gut (1)]
> 80 % Good (B) [Gut (2)]
> 70 % Satisfactory (C) [Befriedigend (3)]
> 60 % Acceptable (D) [Genügend (4)]
<= 60 %: Failed (F) [Nicht Genügend (5)]

* Attendance is mandatory. No-shows for the first unit will have their registration revoked immediately; missing more than 80 % of the total lesson time results in a failing grade. Tardiness may be counted as absence at the discretion of the lecturer. If you should not be able to attend the first lesson please contact the teacher per email, you will be considered as excused and not automatically deregistered.
However, in the interest of health and safety students are strongly encouraged to stay home if they’re not feeling well.

* Everyone who does participate in at least one lesson will receive a grade, except if they de-register before the appropriate deadline.

* There is a zero-tolerance policy on cheating and plagiarism.
