Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

It is the aim of this seminar to assist students in preparing to write their master thesis. The topic of the seminar is related to the regency of Empress Dowager Cixi who de facto reigned China from 1865 to 1908. While biographers assumed for a long time that Cixi did not have much influene on the policy process during her regency, research since the 1970s has revealed that she, indeed, had quite some influence on what was going on in the Empire at the time. Recent findings show that she meticulously prepared herself for fulfilling this unusual duty, and this is how we can understand a lot more about her government style and answer the questions: Did Cixi develop a governane style of her own, or was she compelled to follow the examples of the many male emperors who had ruled the country before her?
