Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The course is taught in a hybrid synchronous mode, i.e. part of the learning group is taught in the lecture hall alternately on a weekly basis, the rest must log in from home via a video conferencing tool (such as BigBlueButton) and can follow the course without being able to actively interact. (Attention: The 1st meeting will be taught via BBB for the entire group!). Before the first meeting you will receive a message via your univie e-mail address telling you to which group you belong.
In order to be graded positively, you must not miss more than one on-campus meeting. Exceptions from the obligation to attend are to be obtained through a medical certificate, in special cases please contact the teacher directly.
Please note that due to the developments of the Covid-19 pandemic the mode of the course can change to home learning at any time.
__________
Targeted training of reading comprehension skills: This encompasses the enlargement of vocabulary and the receptive knowledge of Chinese characters (mainly simplified, but also also traditional characters to a minor extent), since this is the basis for understanding texts in the target language. Another goal is to achieve the ability to analyze and hence understand more complex sentences and paragraphs in order to quickly grasp the gist of texts. In addition, students’ awareness of the difference between oral and written utterances will be promoted and we will practice structures typical of more formal written texts.
We will practice various reading strategies to achieve competence in the areas of "skimming, "scanning", and "reading for detail".

You will read a story outside of class which is written in simple Chinese and reinforces the basic vocabulary by using it repetitively and thus should enable you to actually enjoy reading an entire story in Chinese.
Reading and analysis of the texts (classroom work, group work).
Exercises for various reading strategies (esp. dealing with new authentic texts; intelligent guessing).
Exercises for enlarging the vocabulary and improving knowledge of grammatical structures.

Assessment and permitted materials

Assessment of written and oral contributions during the entire semester (preparation of texts, homework, tasks in Moodle using tools as forum, WIKI, glossaries, quiz, assignment, …): 40%
Oral Exam: 30%
Written Exam: 30% (digital)

Examination topics

All material covered in the class-sessions or as homework and all exercises and material provided in Moodle.

Reading list

Textbook: PENG Zhiping (Hg.): "Hanyu Yuedu Jiaocheng" di-er ce (= "Chinesisch-Lesekurs", Bd. 2): A selection of the texts in chapters 31 to 39.
Additional material will be provided as PDF document in Moodle.
