Aims, contents and method of the course

The course goal is to improve listening and speaking abilities in Chinese. Meanwhile the general knowledge of interculture communication skills and argumente abilities will be also einhenced.
This course will further work on the the theater script from Sha Yexin, Jiang Qing and her Husbands. Four words Proverbs and special daily speeches will be learned and practised using Dialogues and Roleplays. Historical Videos, Interviews and documentary films will be used for listening comprehension. In addition, topics of Chinese culture, history and polictis will be discussed.

Assessment and permitted materials

The course note is based on class participation and homework 20% , Vocabulary Quiz 20% , online oral presentation and Performance P40% , and final skript reading 20%.
Bonus: Learning Journal 5%

This course is mainly for the advanced learners and those who have attended the previous Theater Project course.

Examination topics

There will be no standard exame, but alternative evaluations standards for the class performance.

Due to the pandemic COVID-19 crisis, the courses at the University of Vienna have been transferred to online/Home-learning since 11 March 2020 till the further announced date. Therefore, the teaching approaches of this course have been modified to the following: online meeting weekly, self-learning via relevant broadcast, and videos.

The assessments of this course also update to submissions of video/audio recording, reflection essays, and online oral tests for conversational skills.

The communication with course participants applies through the tools on the Moodle platform of the University of Vienna. i.e., Jitsi, BigBlueBotton, Rocket.Chat, messager, and E-mail as well. Changes to the current information might occur, but the course participants will be informed through Moodle if they happen.

Aims, contents and method of the course

1. Students will discuss topics that are popular in the regions where Mandarin is spoken. We will focus on six everyday issues, such as contemporary society in the context of globalization, the relations between religion and culture, historical people, languages and intercultural communications, environmental protection, and discussion and negotiations in a professional setting.
2. Students can improve their listening and speaking skills, to achieve a level for basic debating.
3. Through the discussions between lecturer and students, in the classroom, students are expected to develop intercultural awareness and intercultural communicative competence.

Assessment and permitted materials

The evaluation includes regular and active participation, contribution in discussions and assessments.
Grading: participation and cooperation 20%, Homework 20%, midterm assessment 30%, and final assessment 30%

#Reminder: With no typical examination forms in this course, the alternative assessments are available, which will be discussed in the first class as well.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Rubrics : 100- 90% : Very Good/1; 89 - 80% :Good/2 ; 79-70% : Fair/3 ; 69 - 60%: Enough/4 ; under 60% :Failed/5.

Active participation in lessons and punctuality are required in each unit. If there are more than three unexcused absences from class, the result is negative (5).

Due to the fact, the course is an oral practice course, in the case of absence, one should provide an official absence proof, such as a doctor sick leave sheet, a memo from another professor, etc. Without official proof, the score of 'exercise in class' and 'cooperation' will be negatively influenced.
