Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

From the founding of the PRC (1949) up to the end of the 1980s Sino-US relations were closely linked to the Cold War. Beijing and Washington saw each other first as a member of the so-called enemy camp, the US continued to maintain diplomatic relations with the Republic of China (Taiwan), during the wars in Korea and Vietnam, China and the United States experienced even military confrontation. After the Sino-Soviet split a complex triangular relationship prevailed between Beijing, Moscow and Washington, which cumulated in the historic visit of US president Richard Nixon in China (1972). With the end of armed conflicts in SE Asia (around 1980) and the East-West confrontation in Europe (after 1989) both China and the US tried to position themselves in the new global system. While the US saw themselves as the now only international superpower, China emerged as a new ecomic and political big power, trying to play an important role in a new a multi-polar world order and deciding on important political and iconomic issues on an equal footing. In the meantime experts and politicians in the US debate whether China's rise amounts to a global danger that has to be contained, or whether active engagement could make Beijing a responsible partner in international relations. The main topics in Sino-US relations in the recent years have been Taiwan, trade issues, global security and human rights.
