Aims, contents and method of the course
The seminar introduces Chinese family and marriage laws since the late Qing Dynasty. The Qing Dynasty Family Code is compared to the Republican Chinese one heavily relying on German and Swiss Family Law. This law is still in force in Taiwan today, having undergone a series of reforms. It is compared with the People's Republic of China marriage laws of 1950, 1980 and 2001.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
The seminar introduces the different family law systems that have existed in China, and discusses different family law institutions, for example adoption, form of marriage, kinship.
Students are provided with an overview on family law literature.

Introduction to Chinese family law by the teacher. Participants prepare individual case studies, oral presentation and written translation.
