Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
Current politics in Northeast Asia is as exciting and fascinating as it has been in the past decades. 2012 marked an important crossroads for both political continuation and change in North Korea, Taiwan, China, Japan and South Korea. This course discusses recent political developments with a particular focus on the separation of powers, (s)elections and the political parties. Since many political decisions are taken by government without recourse to parliament informal aspects of politics are also discussed.
Assessment and permitted materials
Students will be evaluated on basis of performance on assignments (group work/presentations: 30% and written assigments: 45%) and participation in class (25%). Attendance is compulsory but not sufficient for a good participation grade.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
At the end of the course students will be able to understand basic features of the political systems in Northeast Asia and the working of formal and informal politics. Furthermore, students will be able to explain current political events in the selected countries.
Examination topics
Each session starts with an overview followed by group work and short student presentations on specific topics. The lecturer will provide individual feedback to group work presentations and other assignments. Students are expected to do the readings since class discussion is integral to this course.
Reading list
A list of readings will be provided at the beginning of the course.
