Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The "reform and opening" era after Mao's death in the late 70s was was mainly orientated towards economics, but many citizens demanded also political reforms. Through big-character posters (dazibao) and independent journals a grassroot civil rights movement advocated liberties and democratic reforms, independent artists and writers joined this movement called Beijing Spring. Although some reformers inside the Communist Party sympathized with these demands, the leadership banned all pro-democracy activities in early 1981.

Assessment and permitted materials

Credits will be attributed on the basis of the oral presentation within the group (30 pc/points); the individual written papers (including a possible oral discussion, 50 pc/points); regular presence, homeworks and the active participation in debates (20 pc/points) .
