Aims, contents and method of the course

The "reform and opening" era after Mao's death in the late 70s was was mainly orientated towards economics, but many citizens demanded also political reforms. Through big-character posters (dazibao) and independent journals a grassroot civil rights movement advocated liberties and democratic reforms, independent artists and writers joined this movement called Beijing Spring. Although some reformers inside the Communist Party sympathized with these demands, the leadership banned all pro-democracy activities in early 1981.

Assessment and permitted materials

Credits will be attributed on the basis of the oral presentation within the group (30 pc/points); the individual written papers (including a possible oral discussion, 50 pc/points); regular presence, homeworks and the active participation in debates (20 pc/points) . The main criteria will be to which extend the student is capable to analyze the main aspects of the topic and to present them in a systematic and scientific way. 55 pc/points are required to pass the course.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Achieving basic knowledge on China's Democracy Movement of 1978-1981, their role in the economic and social development, related subjects such as freedom of expression and censorship, and current literature on the topics.

Examination topics

After a general introduction into the topic, the students will prepare (probably in small groups) presentations on specific aspects and (individually) written papers.
