Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Aims: acquisition of a theoretical foundation for the other language courses of the first semester; deepening of the language/writing skills acquired in these courses.

Contents: the basic features of the Chinese language and writing (grammar; lexis; phonology; phonetics; principles of character creation, types of written forms, character etymology).

Furthermore:
- presentation of techniques/tools apt to support speaking/reading/writing;
- phonetic transcription systems (Hanyu Pinyin active and the Taiwanese Zhuyin Fuhao passive)
- character lookup methods
- electronic dictionaries
- the manuscript "Zai Hanxuexi xue Hanyu" vol. 1a by Xia / Zeidl (see below)
furthermore: extensions / deepening regarding
- grammar
- vocabulary (mainly based on already learned characters)
- character etymology
- character meaning
- correct stroke order
- (only expected to be passively mastered) traditional characters related to the simplified characters in the textbook
- radicals (= "root components" of Chinese characters, under which the latter can be found in a dictionary).

Methods: lecture; demonstrations; writtten exam (change of the examination mode -> written online examination). Attention: This course is a lecture in the classical sense, it is not a practice course.

Assessment and permitted materials

written examination.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

60 out of 100 points (weighting of the scores achieved in the individual test sections according to the importance of the test sections as assessed by the lecturer).

Examination topics

Anything presented in the classroom, as far as it is contained in the manuscript "Zai Hanxuexi xue Hanyu" by Xia / Zeidl or in the materials provided on the Moodle learning platform during the semester.
