Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Primary goal: The major goal of this course is to endow students, on the basis of ample empirical evidence, with an understanding of language history and pathways of language change, based on both philological skill and linguistic knowledge.
Secondary goals: Understanding of the cognitive foundations of morphological processes and their status in a general framework of grammatical theory.
Acquisition of basic knowledge of current theories and models of linguistic morphology.
Approaches to a diachronic perspective on morphological change, which will be deepened in a subsequent course.

In this course, which builds on the introduction to morphology, the phenomenon of morphological change will be examined in all its dimensions, from the expansion, reorganization and reduction of categorial patterns and the evolution of morphological processes to the semiotically grounded stability and variability of morphological markers anf the interaction of phonological, syntactic and semantic factors of morphogenesis and grammaticalization. Special regard will be paid to the typological aspect of morphological patterning.
