Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

History has always been a favoured motif of literature. However, the genre of historical novels is usually associated with Sir Walter Scott (1771 - 1832), whose works led to a boom of historical novels. Therefore the 19th century is regarded as the heyday of novels which deal with history.
In the 20th century, particularly after WW II, historical novels changed a great deal. However, the need to see historical events through the literary lens is still (or even more) pressing, its importance for the discussion of history and its various interpretations has been acknowledged.
In the seminar we will look at a broad range of examples and discuss various approaches to the presentation of historical events in literature, fictionalization, questions of style etc.
During the first sessions we will outline the development of the historical novel. Later, we will analyze its particular forms and transformations in the 20th century by looking at various texts.
