Aims, contents and method of the course

Middle Breton (1450-1650) and Middle Cornish (14th-16th centuries) are the oldest literary stages of Breton (still spoken in Brittany) and of Cornish, which became extinct in the 18th century. Both languages were first put down to writing in the early Middle Ages, but for different reasons no literature was produced before the late Middle Ages. As for contents, we are dealing with typical works of the European late Middle Ages. Genetically, Middle Breton and Middle Cornish are closely related but at this stage they had already developed in a slightly different but nonetheless parallel way: Middle Breton is influenced by French, and its orthography is influenced by French orthography, while Middle Cornish is influenced by English and has an orthography that is based on contemporary English orthography. In my course, I will try to point out the similarities of the two languages and the differences between them.
