Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
A survey of the mythology of Celtic speaking peoples, with particular emphasis on the literature of medieval Ireland and Wales. The main topics will include: Celtic concepts of the Otherworld, Sovereignty, the Hero and Heroic Biography, and the role and power of the Celtic poet. We will also consider the problem of identifying "Celtic", mythology and contexts for the study of "myth" in the field of Celtic Studies.
Assessment and permitted materials
Written assignments. Mid-term and final exam.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Familiarity with major sources of information about Celtic mythology. Knowledge of core concepts, world-view, and means of transmission of Celtic mythology. Understanding of problems attached to treating Celtic mythology as a unified system.
Examination topics
Lecture and discussion. Written assignments. Mid-term and final exam.
