Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Listening to music is linked closely to emotional perception. We listen to music to relax or push ourself during sports. In social gatherings we choose music to fit or create the right mood - happiness for the birthday party, romantic mood for a wedding or sadness during a funeral. Music can induce group-dynamic effects in large sport events or create a sense of shared identity in public festivals. In movies, TV-shows, documentaries or advertisment music is used to structure the form, accompany figures, create moods and manipulate the perception of situations and meanings.

The emotional effects of music will be discussed using an interdisciplinary approach including psychological and neurobiological models and musicological methods. Exmaples from different areas (movies, ads, theater, sports, religion, politics) shall provide an overview on the topic. Backgrounds and mechanismn of the emotional functions of music shall also be discussed during lecture.
