Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The course aims to further the understanding of the phenomenon that is the "Beat Generation", whose participants have made a major contribution to avant-garde-literature and also the popular culture of the second half of the 20th century. Besides well-known beat authors like Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac and William Burroughs this course will also focus on literary movements related to the Beats like the San Francisco Renaissance and the Black Mountain Poets. Another focus will be on the Beats' tendency for mixed media, especially the combination of music and literature.

paper (approx. 15 pages)

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The students shall gain an introductory knowledge of Beat Literature and apply themselves to the detailed analysis of one sub-topic.

Examination topics

The different topics shall be analyzed in oral presentations, moderated discussions, and a paper.
