Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Sounds and spaces are directly connected, especially when it comes to musical sounds. In processions, parades and demonstrations, sounds are also in motion: Music often moves along a certain route. In the process, social and geographical spaces are formed, changed, consolidated or dissolved. Seemingly contradictory attributes such as sacred-fan, elitist-popular or public-private can be called into question. Social structures and power relations are also frequently demonstrated both internally and externally. Processions and the like are also a global phenomenon, which we will explore in its various forms during the seminar using a variety of examples from Africa, the Americas, Asia and Europe. Using multidisciplinary literature, we will examine how musical processions and similar social practices can be researched in relation to sound, spatiality and society. The focus will be on concepts of spatial theory on sound, as well as on the construction of social space and time from sound studies, philosophy, geography and ethnomusicology, which will be discussed using relevant examples from the academic literature.
