Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Aim of the course is to get into detailed analysis of musical sounds and noise in order to understand the origin and propagation of sound. A variety of open source software, that will be provided via Moodle, will be used during the course. In the first few lessons the basics of acoustics and analysis will be discussed, later students can actively participate with their own laptops and the provided software. Sample sounds for analysis will also be provided via Moodle. Aim of the course is also to get to know different methods of analysis and to be able to use these methods independently.

Assessment and permitted materials

During the course, three small exercises must be completed. At the end, a larger analysis must be done, either alone or in small groups of two or three students. Students attenting to both the anaylsis and sythesis (Prof. Reuter) course can also do one more complex work for both courses. Presence in the lectures is mandatory.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

For the three smaller and the final analysis, points are rewarded. In order the complete the course positively, at least half of the points must be gained.
