Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

In recent years, gender has become of increasing interest within research on Computer-mediated Communication (= CMC). Contrary to early theories, stating that gender differences will be minimized in on-line interaction, a lot of gender differences have been found in CMC. It seems that the inherently democratic character of the internet and the absence of "gating features" do not democratize communication to the extend early theories had expected. Still, gender seems to be a relevant category in online-communication. Actually, recent studies discover a tendency to emphasize gender stereotypical behavior.
We will concentrate on the category "gender" in CMC. We will read studies conducted within the last 10 years in order to discuss research questions, methods, linguistic variables and central findings.
The following issues will be examined:
.) Central features of CMC,
.) gendered internet use,
.) gendered discourse in synchron (chat, ...) and
.) asynchron genres (forum, discussion lists, weblogs, twitter, facebook, etc...) and
.) (automatic) gender guessing.
