Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This ERASMUS+ Blended Intensive Program (BIP) is a joint seminar organized by the Universities of Leipzig, Leuven, and Vienna, with student and staff participants from all three institutions. The first event of its kind in musicology across countries participating in the ERASMUS+ scheme will take place 10–16 April 2023 in Leipzig, complemented by online sessions before and after. It is available for application from BA students in their third year as well as MA students. Accepted students are eligible to receive an ERASMUS+ Short Blended mobility grant. [The application process is already completed!]

The course will introduce students to contemporary topics of music aesthetics, with a focus on music performance, virtuosity, and listening culture, intermedial intersections between music and other arts as well as questions of gender and sexuality. It includes a varied program of concerts, guided tours, and social activities, offering students the opportunity to explore the rich cultural heritage of the “music city” Leipzig.
Framed by a period of online teaching, the course’s core are five days of in-person teaching in Leipzig with lectures, reading groups, student presentations, and discussions addressing issues of performativity, corporeality, music philosophy, intermediality, situated listening, and global aesthetics.

The course combines physical attendance in Leipzig from 10–16 April 2023 (10 and 16 April are travel days) with an online preparatory meeting on 10 March and a wrap-up meeting on 28 April. It will be hosted at Villa Tillmanns – Research Academy Leipzig (https://www.ga.uni-leipzig.de/en/graduate-academy-leipzig/villa-tillmanns).

The course features short introductory lectures on the individual topics as outlined above, combined with communal discussion of readings.
