Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Musical analysis appears to many students as a mysterious and inaccessible world, or a dry desert. The course wants to introduce to musical analysis of tonal music where it seems to be most cumbersome: concerning the analysis of harmonic structures.
Harmony in the music from the Baroque to the Romantic era is, on the one hand, a tool for creating musical expression, and on the other hand (especially in the 18th century) also a means to shape the formal design of music.
The course does not wish to demonstrate analysis as a universal principle and method; its final goal is to show how to understand musical compositions better in their individuality and, perhaps, also to hear them afresh.
Elementary knowledge of the principles of harmony is required. Though the course starts at a relatively elementary level, I can provide no introduction to harmony.
