Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

In this class we are going to take a closer look at bilingual first language acquisition, i.e. the situation when children grow up with two languages from birth. Public opinion as well as research literature on this topic is full of a whole array of myths and stereotypes from very positives "Bilinguals are more intelligent" to outright negative such as "Bilinguals don’t learn any language properly".
In this class we will have a closer look at these myths and stereotypes, compare bilingual first language acquisition to monolingual acquisition, and discover similarities and differences. We will address questions such as: Who is bilingual? Is code-switching and mixing as sign of one fused language system? How are languages represented in the bilingual mind?

Depending on the number of participants in this class we might have a conference day for the presentations of your studies.
