Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
The primary goal of this course is command of the basic technical machinery, which is a prerequisite of any further occupation with formal semantics. This includes in particular some understanding of the subject of inquiry (literal, truth-conditional meaning, as opposed to communicative meaning) and the relationship between formal and natural languages.

assign meaning to them. This fact is the starting point of formal semantics, which seeks to develop a (formal) theory of how the meaning of grammatical sentences is determined by the meaning of their parts, "meaning" being understood as literal meaning, as opposed to communicative meaning. The concern is not with lexical semantics, e.g.
the question of when an object is categorized as a "table", but rather with logical expressions like "no(ne)" or "and", whose lexical meaning is not in the same way intuitively accessible, but which in many sentences function, in a manner of speaking, as the glue that connects the substantial lexical concepts.
