Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The aim is to gain innovative knowledge about the use of music in film, especially about its new dramaturgical and narrative function in connection with social and political development. Depending on the respective development, the style, structure and message of the music changed. Gradually, pieces of music from the traditional repertoire were replaced by newly composed music with contemporary semantics. The end of artistic freedom as a result of indoctrination by the Nazi regime successively forced the international film industry to come to terms with Nazi terror, including in the field of film music. From 1945 on, there was a continuous professionalization and internationalization of the audiovisual media.
This process is exemplified by numerous film quotations (1930 to 2011) from feature films, political and music films, thrillers, documentaries, the newsreel and commercials. The following creators shaped film music in the historical process: J. Addison, W. Axt, Ch. Chaplin, A. Desplat, W. R. Heymann, H. G. Koch, Th. Mackeben, A. Previn, N. Rota, Th. Shapiro, D. Shire et al. Directed by: Chaplin, Clayton, Conway, Corti, Forst, Frankel, Frears, Hitchcock, Hooper, Pakula, Polanski, Thiele, Wilder et al.

This is a written exam: multiple choice questions on the basic material and short descriptions of the interaction of music and subject. The use of aids is NOT allowed.
