Aims, contents and method of the course

Die Vorlesung befasst sich mit musikalischen Entwicklungen in den verschiedenen Kulturräumen Afrikas im 20. Jahrhundert, bis in die Gegenwart, und den politischen, ökologischen, sozialen und kommunikativen Gegebenheiten, die dazu führten. Sie untersucht die kreativ-innovativen Impulse der Komponisten und Instrumentalisten dieser Entwicklungen. Besondere Schwerpunkte sind die Geschichte des Highlife in Ghana (E.T. Mensah) und Yoruba- und Igbo-sprachen Nigeria (Roy Chicago und andere), die Entwicklung der Kongo-Gitarrenmusik (Wendo, Mwenda Jean Bosco etc.) und ihrer Ausbreitung nach Ostafrika, und die Entstehung neuer Formen des Jazz in Südafrika. Ferner wird die neue Kirchenmusik im Kongo, in Tanzania und Uganda diskutiert, wie auch die Entwicklung von Militärmusik am Anfang der kolonialen Periode ("beni" in Tanzania, "malipenga" in Malawi) und Musikformen des Befreiungskampfes mit Integration überlieferter Instrumente wie "mbira" in der "chimurenga"-Musik von Zimbabwe.
