Aims, contents and method of the course

The Tocharian branch of PIE is represented by the two extinct languages Tocharian A and B. The class gives an introduction into the problems of Tocharian philology, the chronology and dialects of TB, and finally the basic structure of TA and TB grammar and its development from PIE. A special focus will lie on how to handle the Tocharian handbooks, text editions, and secondary literature. The class is aimed at students of both linguistics and South Asian Studies. A basic knowledge of linguistic terminology is mandatory, basic knowledge of historical PIE grammar is helpful.

Written exam.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The aim of the class is to make students acquainted with the use of Toch. secondary literature and the basic problems of Tocharian philology and grammar.

Examination topics

Lecture with handouts; reference to further literature; discussion of that literature.
