Aims, contents and method of the course

In musical films gender roles and their diversity reveal profiles of social roles according to the contemporary society and to the conventions of the genre. The concepts presented in films function as patterns or counter-images of behaviour for the audience. In the extended reality of fantasy and virtual reality outsiders like magicians, wizards, fairies and witches transcend the borders of reality what may cause delusions of grandeur which then also may change the concepts of gender roles.
Studies of gender profiles in the media, especially in movies, are reflected in gender studies as indications of social symptoms. The significance of the selected gender roles, their affirmative or critical presentation or exclusions reveal the intentions of the authors. The analysis also has to consider the behavioral patterns of the depicted cultures at the time of the movie's production.
Musical films often present stars of the music scene such as composers, singers, dancers and instrumentalists. In the seminar social concepts of the presentation of gender roles in selected musical films will be analysed according to their specific cultural context and the conventions of movie productions.

Assessment and permitted materials

Regular participation, selection of a musical film from the list of proposals, presentation of an analysis of the movie and submission of a paper according to the prescriptions mentioned in the seminar.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Participants should be ready to watch all the movies treated in the seminar and read the proposed literature. In their presentation they should select significant videoclips and analyse the gender aspect of them in context with the whole movie.

Examination topics

One movie contextualized in the theoretical background which had been elaborated in the seminar.
