Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The seminar will deal with biopics in music movies and musicals about Johann Sebastian Bach, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Giuseppe Verdi, Richard Wagner, Pëtr Il’ič Čajkovskij, Frédéric Chopin, Gustav Mahler up to Johann Strauß and Michael Jackson. While documentations try to stick to real facts – as far as they are known -, fictional movies treat their subjects according to special dramaturgic necessities of the medium in presenting the events of the composers' lives, their kind of composing, the selection of their music, the staging of their operas and the audience’s reception. In the seminar we will discuss these modes of selection between hagiography and revelation in comparison with scientifically approved biographies.

Assessment and permitted materials

Regular active participation, presentation of an analysis of a movie or a musical and w seminar paper.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Participants should be ready to view the biopics treated in the seminar and read selected biographic articles (e.g. MGG or New Grove), present an analysis of one of the movies or musicals, choose excerpts from it and write a seminar paper about it.
