This course explores the philosophical theories of music and emotion in the western tradition, from antiquity to the end of the Renaissance. Participants will learn how representatives of major premodern western philosophical traditions have tried to explain the power of music, and its relationship with emotion, reason, irrationality, medical theories, theological ideas and political order.

- one short class presentation (approx. five to ten minutes)
