This course explores the philosophical theories of music and emotion in the western tradition, from antiquity to the end of the Renaissance. Participants will learn how representatives of major premodern western philosophical traditions have tried to explain the power of music, and its relationship with emotion, reason, irrationality, medical theories, theological ideas and political order.
Assessment:
- attendance at all classes (one absence is permissible)
- class participation (this presupposes that you read the weekly materials!)
- one short class presentation (approx. five to ten minutes)
- one major essay, due on January 15 2018
Please note: All the classes will be taught on Saturdays in November. Participants will receive the required reading by PDF in October.
