Aims, contents and method of the course

History, methods and current status of the studies of language death as an academic discipline.
Language shift and language death.
Language retention strategies and the reversal of language shift.

Assessment and permitted materials

Participants are expected to deliver a presentation and a short paper.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The course aims at providing students with introductory knowledge of the history and methods of and the current status quo in the studies of language death. A strong focus will be on Celtic languages like Breton and Scots Gaelic which have been investigated since the beginnings of academic interest in language shift and language death.

Examination topics

A mixture of lecture, moderated discussion, and presentations by students.
