Aims, contents and method of the course

Quiet often the popular fascination with prehistoric times and prehistoric science lies on a different level than professional archaeology would wish for. Popular images not in accordance with the scientific dogma and/or reality abound (e.g. Indiana Jones, Lara Croft, Modern Druidism, ...). How did they come into existence? What lies beyond those images? How do we deal with them?

Assessment and permitted materials

Oral and written presentation.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

This course aims at presenting an overview of public images of archaeology and at analysing the construction of such images. In addition it wishes to analyse the position of academic archaeology in those mechanism.
