Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Goals:
Overview of the history and research of one of the currently most successful styles of popular music, discussion of various research approaches to investigating hip-hop, introduction to the analysis of popular music using the example of hip-hop music, imparting a better understanding of the emergence of popular music between globalization and localization through the concept of "glocalization" and a focus on the Austrian hip-hop scene

Contents:
Right from the start, hip-hop music was created between the poles of tradition and innovation, between mainstream and underground, and since the 1990s at the latest between globalization and localization. The course aims to provide basic knowledge about the history and development of the hip-hop culture and its musical form, with a special focus on the Austrian hip-hop scene. In addition, various possibilities for scientific approaches (from the fields of musicology, cultural studies and American hip-hop studies) to the phenomenon hip-hop are presented. Using selected hip-hop songs, an introduction to the music analysis of hip-hop and its subgenres is given and characteristics that are of particular importance are demonstrated. The growing number of female, trans or non-binary rapper and producer is taken into account by focusing on the subject of gender representation in hip-hop, which has been the subject of much public debate in recent years. By including the local, Austrian form of hip-hop music, the phenomenon of "glocalization" is also discussed and illustrated with the help of music examples how this manifests itself in Austrian (and international) hip-hop music.

Method:
The course is designed as a lecture on popular music with a final exam. It is held in german.
