Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

In the context of ethnomusicology ethnographic methods play a central role in investigating musical and dance practices, discourses and contexts. The focus is on field research, which revolves around experiencing, observing, questioning, participating in and documenting music and dance “in the field”. Whether rural, urban, local or digital, the field is understood as the space in which musical, dance and discursive interaction takes place.
In this exercise, students develop the basic methods of ethnographic data collection by reading and discussing texts together and applying what they have learned in the form of small research projects. Participants will go through the process of musicological field research, which includes the following steps: developing topics and research questions, selecting and narrowing down the “field”, dealing with interviewees, observing and participating in musical contexts, field research techniques such as field research notes, interviews (narrative, guided) and recordings, and ethnographic writing and presentation.
