Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

In this course (which is a continuation of the course Middle Welsh: Introduction held in the wintersemeser) the students will be further familiarized with Middle Welsh. In this course, pieces from various historical texts from medieval Wales will be read:
– the chronicle Brut y Tywysogyon, which deals with the whole history of Wales from the early Middle Ages up to 1282;
– the biography of King Gruffudd ap Cynan, who was the most important ruler in Wales in the first half of the 12th century;
– the pseudo-historical Historia Regum Britanniae of Geoffrey of Monmouth (dealing, among other things, with Arthur and Merlin).

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The course is intended for students who already have at least a beginner's knowledge of Middle Welsh and serves to further familiarize with Middle Welsh.
