Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Goals:
Contrapunto alla mente: participants get insights in basic polyphonic methods by singing; furthermore they recognize these in written compositions.
Historical Solmization: participants can sing with Guidonian syllables and gather practical insights melody, mode and polyphony.

Content:
- Solmization: gamut, hexachords, guidonian hand, litterae and voces, mutation. Terms of the style (musica recta/musica ficta/falsa etc.), interval species, modal system(s)

- polyphonic elements/methods: Gymel, Faux bourdon, clausulae and cadenze, basic three and four part methods, canons and imitation in different intervals, basic introduction to free counterpoint.

This course is first and foremost a practical one, discussions on composition and improvisation are nonetheless welcome.

Assessment and permitted materials

- active participation in the exercises and discussions
- filling out exercise papers

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Presence (three absences tolerated). Active participation and written exercises mandatory
