Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

No large auditorium, no open-air concert and no room for contemporary light music is used without sound reinforcement systems, but the quality of the sound reinforcement is often more than poor.
The often unsatisfactory result is commonly referred to as "poor acoustics" - although, due to revolutionary new developments in the field of loudspeaker technology in the 1990s, a comprehensible sound reinforcement is usually possible in principle in conjunction with suitable room acoustic knowledge and measures.
In this course, an introduction to the basics of room acoustics and intelligible sound reinforcement for speech and music will be given.
Based upon a basic introduction to the laws of room acoustics and their application for sound reinforcement purposes and the psychophysical principles relevant to intelligibility, requirements for room acoustics measures and sound reinforcement technology are derived in order to enable intelligible sound reinforcement even under adverse room acoustics conditions, which are a prerequisite for successful transmission of the acoustic signal and is thus often closely linked to the economic success of events or the interpretation intentions of artists using electroacoustic sound reinforcement.
The course is intended to qualify the participants so that poor room acoustics and sound reinforcement solutions are not taken for granted, but become a basic competence to assess the quality of sound reinforcement solutions possible under given boundary conditions and room acoustic conditions appropriate for the use.

Assessment and permitted materials

There will be a written exam for the performance record, with dates after the actual lecture dates. One sheet of paper in DIN A 4 (= maximum 2 pages) Format with handwritten notes is permitted as exam help.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Minimum requirement for a positive assessment:
- Participation in the written examination
- Answering all questions therein
- Each correctly assessed question is positively evaluated
- A minimum of 60% of the total points must be achieved to successfully pass the written examination.
- The following scores are to be achieved for the following grades:
>/= 60%: Sufficient (Mark 4);
>/= 70% Satisfactory (Mark 3);
>/= 80%: Good (Mark 2);
>/= 90%: Very good (Mark 1).

Examination topics

The material of the lecture consisting of the main aspects:
Basic knowledge of room acoustics and electroacoustics.
Basics of intelligibility and sound reinforcement technology.
