Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The course gives an overview of the history of writing and writing systems in the Celtic languages (starting chronologically with Lepontic and spanning the centuries up to recent early 21st cent. developments). A short introduction to orthographic design and the typology of orthographic systems will be given. The final part of the course will deal with the psycholinguistic and ideological-historical implications of the 20th century Spelling Wars in various Celtic languages.

Assessment and permitted materials

Written examination at the end of the term.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Participants will gain an insight into both the systems and history of orthographic systems used in Celtic languages and the basic of orthographic design and its psycholinguistic implications.

Examination topics

Lecture (supported by Power Point and Handouts) and discussion.
